Festival of quilts; heritage park

It was cool, cloudy, and rainy when I left home... When I arrived at the quilt festival, the rain had stopped, and the sun was trying to peek through... within an hour, the rain was back, then the sun came out, the rain came back, the sun came out... It was mixed all day long.

I felt for those folks who were putting out the quilts, then rushing them back inside, then putting them out again...

So many wonderful quilts to look at and drool over... I think this one was my favorite of the day, with all the bright colors on the black... And so intricate with all the many, many pieces...

This red one was interesting with it's three dimensional pinwheels...

Loved these bright colors...

So many pieces...

I see trees...

Beautiful... but so much work...

This was good for a chuckle...

and so was this one... (the man bench)

incredible bali quilt...

Such a great event! ... even with the rain...

More hydrangea fabric

I must have really loved this hydrangea fabric from Lakehouse when it came out, probably 8-10 years ago. I've made two quilts with it, finished another top, and found this one in my stash, already cut out and just waiting to be sewn together...

There isn't enough of the pink to finish it (which is maybe why it was put away), but fortunately for me, it is still in print and available, so I can get more down the road.  In the meantime, I located the pattern in my Stack n Whack book, and started assembling what was already cut out.

The pattern calls for making half blocks to make it easier to sew in rows, but here is what a whole finished block looks like:

I am a big fan of the kaleidoscope effect of stack n whack quilts. There's enough diamonds cut out for a queen size quilt, so this could potentially keep me busy for a while.

D9P top done

This is my disappearing nine patch quilt I'm making for my mom, who requested a purple quilt.  The top is finished and I've ordered batting and backing fabric from Connecting Threads. It should be here within a week.

I opted to go with a royal purple flannel for the back, to keep with the purple theme. (my camera makes this fabric appear bluish, but I promise it's various shades of purple).

Until that all arrives, I'll just have to work on another "something" I have on the go.

Magic binding

I was on Pinterest, and saw this post for Magic Binding.  Essentially, it is a two color binding, with one side bigger than the other, so that when you fold it in half, it looks like it has piping on it. The part that appealed to me even more than how cute that looked, was the fact that it was all sewn with the machine and there was NO hand stitching.

So, I gave it a whirl...

Closer inspection...

I love the concept of this binding, but I will need to make it a few more times to perfect it. This random blue quilt was a good one to try it on, as this is my own quilt for my own bed and nobody has to see it but me.

That being said...
I am happy to report that it is finally finished. I don't love it, but I like it well enough to use it, and it'll be nice to not fight over a double size comforter anymore on our queen sized bed. One more project off the work-in-progress list. Back to doing what I love to do, which is make quilt blocks and assemble quilt tops. And I have lots more projects to work on! Stay tuned!

At last...

I like to do things while I watch Netflix (my only source of TV); multitasking so to speak. It took me about three weeks to pick out all the topstitching on that @!#$%*& random blue quilt, using an hour here, and an hour there (and the whole final season of Prison Break)... This quilt is testing my love of this hobby... But I'm so relieved that I took the time to do it, because this weekend I finished the new topstitching and I like it oh so much better.

The back:

It is now ready for binding, and then I can scratch one more project off my WIP list.
